Countdown to the 2010 Soccer World Cup...

Postby stackoverflow » Thu Apr 29, 2010 6:24 pm

So there are currently 42 days to go before the start of the Soccer World Cup.

While I am not much of a soccer fan I'm sure I'll be watching a few of the games on television. Is there anyone on the forum that has purchased tickets for one (or more) of the games?

(Thoughts and comments welcome of course!)

Now we're down to 33 days.

We managed to get a few tickets for the semi-final in Durban through my work but we are using them for visiting business partners from Europe. I'll be watching the semi-finals at one of the fan parks.

The favourites must be Brazil plus the European teams of Spain, Portugal, Italy, Netherlands and Germany.

Our infrastructure (particularly transport) is still far from ready. The roads are still under construction, the Gautrain has yet to run and the Bus Rapid Transport system is far from optimum.

I suppose it will be a uniquely African event, including vuvazela's.

Fan parks? I'll have to google that. I'm partially excited - I mean it would be hard not to get caught up in it, soccer fan or not. I do hope though that the impact on morning/evening traffic will not be too great for those of us who will be working during that time.

The official name is FIFA Fan Fest. See here:

Should be good fun. I see the Cape Town one is at the Grand Parade.

Indeed. My curiosity is piqued now... especially since I have wonderful childhood memories of the Grand Parade. I think perhaps I should put in a request for a few days leave so I can check it out.
