Download Day: Mozilla goes for Guinness World Record

Postby stackoverflow » Thu May 29, 2008 8:20 pm

For the release for Firefox 3, Mozilla is trying to set the record for the most software downloads in 24 hours!

'Download Day' which is the day on which it will all go down. It will most likely be in June, depending on the availability of Firefox 3.

Right now they're accepting pledges from people and taking their email addresses so they can be informed about when Download Day will occur. For more info and to pledge, go here.

Last I checked 531 people from SA had already pledged...

Lets hope Mozilla can handle that amount of traffic in one day! :D

What browser do you like to use?

I have them all, IE, FireFox, Opera and Safari but i still continue using IE. It could be just force of habit.

Depends. At home I mostly use Firefox... except for sites that have not (yet!! ) been re-written to work with it.

At work I use mostly IE, on the LAN. (I'm not sure why but to me using IE on the Net is like diving in shark-infested waters with no cage... ) Also I got used to the tabs in Moz. I know IE7 supports them but its to me its just an ugly browser, period.

Why not?
I'm in!

SA is now on 2354
I'm not pro or against MS - I just hate the fact that somethong that works (ie XP) gets replaced with something new (ie Vista)
I agree that there must be progress but why not build it on an established proven foundation?

Good point yes. Makes me wonder what MS is trying to do by replacing a popular OS with a new one each time. People are still reluctant to upgrade to Vista and MS is already talking about releasing Windows 7 some time in 2010...

I'm just really glad that they decided to hold onto XP a bit longer. Apparently it'll still be released on low cost machines until 2010. XP is adequate and I don't feel any inclination to move to Vista anytime soon...

I got FireFox 3

To be completely honest, it has not changed much!!. I don't particularly like FireFox so I'm gone back to Internet Explorer again.

Any idea if they got the world record?

I haven't even installed it yet, although I did download it on D Day.

Pity. We'll have to arrange an intervention to free you from the collective. [Think Star Trek / Seven-of-Nine]

According to their FAQs page here the result should be released about a week after D Day. Downloads need to be validated to determine authenticity. Either way I think they're well over their expectations.

I didn’t get the e-mail about D Day
I investigated and found that my virus package (one of the top ones) marked Mozilla as a spam site.
I think I know who paid them to do it!
Enough said

Funny I won the same Lotto! (Twice)
The spam blocker didn’t stop me from becoming a millionaire but either T--- Pro 2008's "bad site" monitor or my SP blocked all Email from spreadfirefox.com - Hard to tell because I clear all history on my PC once a week.
I should not complain because spam and other virus related "bugs" is killing the internet and Email
Just last week I received an Email from Idi Amin where he promised that he will invite me to his next Birthday party - if I open the attached link
