Galaxy Zoo's Blue (Green) Mystery
Hey everyone. Check this out. This has to be one of the coolest, weirdest discoveries ever.
About a year ago a project known as Galaxy Zoo was started in which members of the public viewed images of galaxies unseen before by the human eye, in order to classify them.
The images were taken using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey telescope in New Mexico. During the course of Galaxy Zoo last year, a Dutch science teacher viewed an object which she could not classify and placed a question about it, along with its picture on the Galaxy Zoo blog. She referred to it simply as a "Voorwerp" which means object in Dutch (and Afrikaans).
No one responded to her question for a long time as they didn't know where the object was. After determining its location and looking at the object they were still unable to figure out exactly what it is, but only what it might be. From its accompanying picture it looks like a wispy green cloud or even a puff of smoke.
At any rate, this strange object is causing a great deal of excitement in the Astronomy community with Astronomers trying to get observational time on various devices, including the Hubble Telescope, so they can have a closer look at this object.
No one knows exactly what its is, although there are lots of ideas about what it might be. Here's the first and second parts.
