NVIDIA video card crunching

Postby Pongo on Fri Dec 26, 2008 10:56 pm

Hi Everybody
Long time since I posted. Been very busy.
CUDA enabled NVIDIA video cards can be 10x faster than a 3.4 GHz P4 using the GPU + 0.4% of a CPU.
With the right configuration a quad will crunch 5 (4xCPU + 1 CUDA) work units at any time
I noticed there are only 2 crunchers in S.A. using their NVIDIA graphic cards to crunch work-units.
Currently there are 2 projects: GRUGRID & SETI (cuda) that support “CUDA”
Here is a list of NVIDIA cards you can use.
I’m using one of the bottom end NVIDA cards: a “Geforce 9600GT” 512M and it is earning 3000+ credits a day!
You need to download a “CUDA” version - BOINC 6.3.1 or later and the latest drivers from NVIDA.
Here are the detailed instructions for GPUGRID and here for SETI.
There are a few drawbacks because this way of crunching is still in the infant stage.
One example is that your PC’s response becomes very “s l o w” and you need to suspend the GPU crunching application manually in BOINC manager to work at normal speed.

Good luck!

Hi Pongo

Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately, I do not have a NVIDIA video card. It seems quite interesting as you can still crunch on the CPU cores as well.

A new PC is still a while away yet, but by then the technology will surely be quite mature.

By the way, I see the Playstation 3 can also be used. I wonder how many of our team members have access to one.
