First PrimeGrid Challenge of 2009

Postby Warped » Tue Jan 27, 2009 7:26 pm

For those interested, the first PrimeGrid Challenge of 2009 is already under way.

It is called The Year of the Ox Challenge, named after the Chinese New Year.

Remember to select 321 Prime Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section.

ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." WU's will take ~7-9 hours on fast/newer computers and 12+ hours on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)

Hi Warped

This challenge finished last week right? Have the results been posted yet?

Hi Stack

Yes, indeed, the Challenge finished last weekend (Saturday, 31 Jan). In order to finalise the reults, at least two valid workunits for each test are required. These can take up to 2 weeks to receive, so the reults thus far are considered provisional. However, there should be very little change now.

Unfortunately, I was away at a Conference for most of the Challenge period, so set my computer to crunch while away, but could have done much more.

Talking about Challenges, I note that WCG has numerous Challenges going on at any one time. However, we have, it appears, only ever taken part in one.

Hi Warped

S.A. BOINC indicated last year that he could enter us in a Challenge if we wanted, and since we've grown in numbers considerably, I think now would be a great time to take part in one. :D

Hi Stack

I've sent S.A. BOINC a pm. Let's see what happens.

Hi Warped

Thanks for entering us in a challenge, but how about a longer one? :) 1 day wasn't really enough time to get lots of people involved.

Hi Stack

Agreed. In fact, I'm going to start another thread to discuss the WCG Challenges as the title of this one is misleading.

See you there!

Warped.
